17 Cleaning hacks for busy moms (that are totally budget friendly)

As a busy mom have a few solid cleaning hacks up your sleeve can make all the difference in your daily life.

I’m going to be SUPER honest with you all. I used to be super terrible at cleaning. We have two dogs and two very messy children and the overwhelm was real when it came to keeping then house in order.

Then we found out my daughter was literally allergic to everything outside and inside. This included trees, DUST, mold, grass… and so on.

Suddenly having ways to clean a house efficiently and quickly became very important. She was suffering from some pretty serious eczema and we were convinced that because we weren’t deep cleaning regularly enough it was affecting her.

Since then I’ve tried my hardest to do better at being ‘the clean mom’. I have improved greatly. But I won’t lie, there are still times when my house looks like a tornado hit it!

These are some hacks I’ve found and come up with along the way that have made ALL the difference! They are quick, easy, and totally budget-friendly.

1. Have a rug that is super easy to clean and sets you up for success

So between the two children and two dogs plus dust and pet allergies keeping any rug in our home vacuumed and completely free of dander and dust is SO important.

Then one day I decided to be a crazy person and buy a white rug because it was perfect for our living room. It was beautiful, and then it was all but ruined three months later despite vacuuming and spot cleaning just about daily.

My daughter now yells at anyone who steps on our carpets with shoes, because I instated that rule with the beautiful new rug that is no more.

You see with dogs and children a white rug is NEVER going to stay white, even with constant cleaning. I am way too busy to rent a carpet cleaner every month.

I resigned myself to a rug that was just OK and I still constantly cleaned.

ENTER RUGGABLE. I discovered Ruggable and immediately contacted them to see if they’d work with me on this post!

Now I have a straight-up beautiful rug AND it’s cream! Yep. I don’t have to worry about my daughter’s allergies or my dogs muddy paws.

You can actually throw this rug in the washer! No renting machines to keep it clean. No praying that you actually got all the crap out of it. No worrying if it’s going to look brown in two months.

Cost-wise it is on par with just about anything else you’d buy, but it lasts way longer! Since they have a pad and rug that are separate you can also buy a new rug for even cheaper if you decide you want something different.

My Ruggable Rug has saved me SO much time cleaning and it is absolutely a hack that I’m going to stand by!

2. Clean where you are.

This is a hack that over time I’ve discovered is SO valuable. You do not need a solid hour to clean.

If you can carve out five minutes while you are cooking, or in the bathroom, or chilling in your bedroom to pick up it will help you SO much in the long run.

Here are a few ways that I do this every day:

  • While in the shower clean the shower! A quick wipe down will keep you from having to really scrub after things build up.
  • Clean the kitchen while you are cooking dinner.
  • Pick up your kids room while they are getting ready for bed.

By just taking 15 minutes each day to tackle SOMETHING you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make!

3. Make your whole house smell great without chemicals in a few minutes

This is my absolute favorite way to make my house smell better. Put on a simmer pot for a chemical-free way to make your house smell amazing all day long!

Here is my favorite simmer pot ingredients:

  • Apple
  • Fresh Cranberries
  • Orange
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon stick

Cut up the apple and orange and throw all of these things in a big pot together on the stove. Fill it up with water and bring it to a boil. Then let simmer all day long!

Just add water as it runs out to keep the smell going throughout your home.

4. Always have magic erasers on hand

If you have toddler’s you have to know about the true magic of magic erasers. From scummy tubs to crayon on the walls you HAVE to have these on hand for quick cleanings at all times.

Check out the post from Real Simple to see even more amazing uses.

PS- You do not have to buy the name brand magic erasers, check out this bulk amount on Amazon that is a great deal!

5. DIY swiffer mop pads + cleaning cloths

This is a trick I tried a few months ago and I’ll admit I was skeptical at first but I was floored by how well it worked.

What you will need:

  • A stack of washcloths (I used about 10)
  • 1 1/2 Cups of water
  • 1 1/2 Cups of Vinegar
  • 20 drops of essential oils
  • An airtight container

Pretty simple, just mix the liquids and pour on the washcloths. They will fit perfectly on the Swiffer! I also use these for wiping down surfaces, they can get grime off of even the worst counters and tables!

6. Vinegar and baking soda is your best friend

Vinegar and baking soda is a dynamic duo that will have even the worst of stains and messes cleaned up.

I don’t really use normal chemical cleaning products, so I always have these on hand!

Use this duo on stainless steel, hard to scrub pains, carpet stains, and even mildewed clothes!

7. Use Rain-X in the shower

This is not something I’ve tried but it’s come highly suggested!

Use some Rain-X in your shower just like you would a car windshield. This keeps off scum and water so that you can wait longer in between cleanings.

8. Clean your blender in a flash

Want to clean your blender without having to stick your hand all up in the blades? Put 3 cups of warm water and some liquid soap in the blender and turn it on for about 15 seconds. It’s best to do this right after use!

9. Have a good air filter for less dust

Having a good air filter can make all the difference in the amount of dust in your home!

Make sure to change it out regularly, we do every month. To actually remember this we subscribe to Second Nature to get our filters delivered each month to ensure ours is always in tip-top shape.

10. De-clutter and have lots of baskets

One key thing that I have learned the hard way is that the fewer things you have the easier it is to clean.

You don’t realize how many things can become scattered around the house that are just unneeded! Getting rid of as many things as possible will help make quick clean-ups even faster.

If you can’t seem to de-clutter at least organize the things you do have! Everything having a place makes it way easier to actually pick up.

Baskets are the perfect way to keep things out of sight but still be able to keep all the things you love so much.

11. Use canned air hard to clean dust

Even with a good air filter dust can build up in places that are SO hard to clean. Like vents for example. When we moved into our new home the vents were caked with it.

Canned air was the easiest way to get in all the tiny nooks and crannies. I tried everything before that and it was the only thing that actually got them clean in a decent amount of time!

12. Focus on one thing at a time

Has this been you before? You try to clean one room but you get distracted and end up starting on another. An hour goes by and instead of one clean room, you have three half cleaned ones.

Become WAY more efficient by sticking to one room at a time and putting a timer on to keep you focused!

I usually set a 15-20 minute timer to keep myself focused on one area. If I get done sooner that’s great! If I don’t I’ll set another timer and keep at it.

13. Choose music instead of TV while your cleaning

So I love to Netflix binge just as much as the next mom but if I put on a TV show while I am cleaning I tend to move much much slower than if I put on a good podcast or music.

Clean hacks that will making cleaning your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and the rest of your house a breeze! These cleaning hacks are the perfect tips and tricks to deep clean your home.

14. Have a laundry basket with you as you go from room to room

So this is a trick I picked up a long time ago and it is just so convenient! When I start to clean I grab an empty laundry basket and put anything that does belong in that room in it.

Then, as I move from room to room I either take things out and put them where I need to go or I keep adding things as I find them.

This cuts down on me walking back and forth from room to room AND helps me keep focused on the one area that I am cleaning in.

15. Use a squeegee to get pet hair off of furniture

You know how dog and cat hair just gets into every little upholstered item you own? Everything can’t be as good as a Ruggable rug.

Get a squeegee and use it on your couches and pillows to get all the dog and cat hair off in a jiffy.

16. Have multiple laundry baskets for different color clothing

Laundry may be my most hated chore. What I hate even more than folding laundry is having to sort it.

I know some people don’t do that but I just have to. It’s what my momma taught me!

Making sure you have enough laundry baskets for each different load and instead of throwing everything into one basket you can sort it as you throw it in.

One step is taken out of the equation!

I really like this laundry basket set for this because it doesn’t take up a lot of space.

17. Create a cleaning schedule and have everyone pitch in

This is probably one of the most crucial things you can do. Create a cleaning schedule that actually works for you. Not one that everyone else says should work.

This process takes trial and error, but you have to figure out what works best for you! AND you have to get your family to help.

Yeah, I know that sounds crazy. But getting a few more people to chip in for an hour if that can make all the difference.

Make sure to come up with a fun reward for everyone’s efforts- you included!
